The Sunday Octoechos is a two-part liturgical publication – the first of its kind -- in English. Its two sections include: I. The Service Book, or text for Sunday services (Small Vespers, Great Vespers, Compline, Midnight Service, Matins, and the Beatitudes) according to the eight-tone cycle.  II. The canon hymns (Heirmosi) for Compline, Midnight Service, and Matins using Znamenny Chant. Each hymn is displayed side-by-side in two ways: one presentation with the ancient “hook” notation; and one presentation using “western” staff notation. This book can serve as a “hymnal” book for the canon hymns of Sunday services in Znamenny Chant according to the eight-tone cycle, or serve as a lovely addition to your home library.

The text and musical style used for The Sunday Octeochos were derived from manuscripts and printed books written before the reforms introduced in the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th century. The use of Znamenny Chant carries on a tradition of liturgical singing for almost 1000 years, with a documented history back to the 10th – 11th Century.

The hard-cover book is a “user friendly” size of 6” x 9,” with two “marker ribbons” in the binding for the user to easily move between canons or between the text and the hymns.  With the purchase of the book, a CD set of two (2) instructional CD’s will accompany the book -- at no additional cost -- to assist the user in learning to sing the hymns in English.

Translation was completed by Hieromonk German Ciuba , with editing and musical adaptation of hymns from Slavonic to English by Rev. Deacon Philip M. (Mitrophan) Simon.
