About the Artist --

In an interview for public television early in the 1980s Richard Kemble stated: "I feel like an artist no matter what I am doing!" Richard was a man of many talents showcasing his creativity. He won awards for floral arrangements in garden club competitions. His interior design projects were much sought after. He taught his students at Pratt Institute the art of garde manger. Everything in his life was executed with an artistic touch. When he entered one of his prints into a juried exhibition, Art in New Jersey, at the New Jersey State Museum in 1967, it was included in the 154 pieces selected from a field of over 800 applicants. This print, how public is my window, was selected as one of the 20 purchase awards for the museum. In 1974, Richard Kemble received an individual printmaking fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, one of only 20 awarded in this first year of the competition. These two awards early in his career were catalysts towards Richard’s future as a fine artist. Over the next forty years, Kemble executed over 350 print editions. Each print was "hand pulled" with the help of an assistant. After he sold his studio, he focused on drawings and other media. He was inspired by his surroundings at his homes in Nantucket and Key West. Many of his works are reminiscent of the water surrounding both of these islands.
