Embrace was born, so to speak, at the Stanford Institute of Design (d.school) during a class called “Entrepreneurial Design for Extreme Affordability.” The class was posed with this challenge: Twenty million premature and low birth weight infants are born every year, primarily in developing countries. Four million of them die. Develop a baby incubator for these babies that costs less than 1% the cost of a traditional incubator. The Embrace co-founders traveled to Nepal and India, witnessing the extreme need firsthand. They talked to hundreds of mothers, midwives and healthcare workers to develop a product that would meet the needs of the local communities. After years of product development and testing in India, they launched the Embrace infant warmer, which costs a fraction of the price of existing solutions, functions without a continuous supply of electricity, is portable, safe and intuitive to use and promotes bonding between mother and child. The product is now helping mothers and babies around the world.
