I once heard someone say lightning rarely strikes twice. Five hurricanes and tropical storms in four years – framed by the devastation of Hurricane Rita on one end and the record storm surge flooding of Hurricane Ike on the other – might challenge that presumption. The American Red Cross, armed with able and ready volunteers and money from the Disaster Relief Fund, came immediately to our aid.

This is what the American Red Cross does all across the country whenever disaster strikes. And rarely does this organization get the thanks and recognition deserved. “Gems to Enjoy” - the first ever Alter’s Gem Jewelry Cookbook – was cooked up to benefit the Disaster Relief Fund. About the time it was headed to print, we got hit just weeks apart by Hurricane Humberto and Hurricane Ike - clearly the ingredients for a new cookbook.

“Gems to Savor” was born. We again invited our customers, our staff, our vendors and high-profile designers, elected officials and celebrities to participate in this effort to help replenish the Disaster Relief Fund – AND THEY DID!
Forty U. S. Governors, plus U. S. Senators and Congressmen, officials from the State of Texas and the City of Beaumont, celebrities and designers, all came forward to join our staff, vendors and customers.
