Hundreds of books have been written about this important book of the Bible authored by the Holy Spirit through James. Very few of these volumes have portrayed accurately its message and meaning. Written to Jews who had trusted Christ and thus were already saved, the book of James was the instruction book of godly living to that early Christian church. Expressly written for the purpose of teaching the new and growing churches of that day, it still stands as a complete and conclusive instruction to all believers throughout the centuries. Unfortunately, there is a tendency on the part of many authors to interpret James’ teaching to include works as necessary for salvation. My father, who was a Methodist preacher, attended Asbury College, which in that day was a fundamental college in Wilmore, Kentucky. Consequently, I was taught from an early age never to believe in eternal security because it encourages people to live really sinful lives. In my own college years, I became a born again Christian and realized eternal security was not a doctrine of the Baptist church or any other denomination but was straight from the Bible.
