About the Author --
DJ Foroughi has been
involved with football since his early childhood days in Rio de Janeiro, kicking the round ball whenever - and as often as - possible. He first
reported on the World Cup for the English language daily Tehran Journal
in 1974, and would later attend the 1994, 1998 and 2006 tournaments. Foroughi covered the 2010 South Africa finals as a guest analyst and
subject matter expert for both Voice of America (Persian Service) and
Washington International Network (WIN) television. He will be returning
to Brazil this summer - more than 50 years after having left the land of
sun, samba and futebol - to take in the 2014 World Cup. An avid
participant and passionate fan, he played the sport in college as well
as for amateur clubs competing in New York, Virginia, the District of
Columbia and Maryland. He enjoyed a 20-year run with Persepolis FC, a
team he founded in 1984 and for whom he turned out as player/manager –
capturing more than a dozen league, regional, state and tournament
titles. Foroughi received his first coaching badge in 1980 while an
undergraduate at the State University of New York (SUNY-Albany) and USSF
referee certification a year later under the tutelage of then top FIFA
referee Toros Kibritjian. He has coached youth teams of various age
levels in the small town of Boyds, Maryland where he presently resides
with his wife Maryam and 20 year-old son Arian.
