The hobby of coin collecting has traveled a long road to get where it is today. A person reading the advertisements in current numismatic publications may come to believe that the only way to store and display a coin collection is to have each piece certified and encapsulated by a third-party grading service, with each capsule then arranged back to front within a plastic box designed for that purpose. There are certainly some safe-guards built into that system for both the coins and the collector, but it is a development that has been with us only since the 1980s. Before that time other methods of storage and display were employed with varying degrees of success and appeal.
