About the book --
There is nothing more American
than the barn. Barns evoke images both past and present. It’s not
uncommon for people to become emotional when discussing the memories
associated with their barns. It’s as though the barns come to hold all
their personal and family history—good and bad—and when you open the
barn door, literally or metaphorically, it all comes flooding out. Barn
stories are often about where we have been, where we are going, and
perhaps our future. Barn stories are about who we are.
About the Author --
The Mottonens’ passion
for agrarian history led them on a multi-year odyssey around the state
of Utah, searching for unique barns and the stories behind them. Curious
and empathetic, both Doug and Myrna are natural-born and professional
listeners: Doug worked as a mental health professional and Myrna as a
teacher. By sharing the personal—and sometimes historical—stories behind
these barns, Doug and Myrna hope to inspire community leaders and the
general public to not only appreciate these venerable structures, but
preserve them, too. They would especially like to thank Diane Olson, for
her assistance in crafting each story into a lively read. Photo editing,
illustration, graphic design, and layoutwas done by Polly Mottonen, who
steeped herself in each story, helping to make the book lovely and bring
it to life.
