About the book --

Humane Society of the Ozarks offers a number of volunteer opportunities. From showing dogs at adoption events at the Farmers Market or local pet stores, to assisting with various fundraising events each year, to fostering rescued animals, to providing clerical support in the office, the HSO can offer any person wanting to volunteer with a suitable role for supporting the overall goals of the organization! If you would like to join our Volunteer Program, please visit our website at www.hsozarks.com, click “Get Involved” and complete the online volunteer form. You will be added to the HSO volunteer list and will receive weekly e-mails informing you of upcoming volunteer opportunities. Over the past 3½ years, 11 dedicated animal lovers have taken on the role of HSO volunteer coordinator, usually with two to three of them teaming together to get this extremely tough and time consuming job done: Mary Beth Sublett Lohr went it alone as the first volunteer coordinator; Lauren Lowe and Lindsey Simpson next worked together as volunteer co-coordinators; then came Amanda Malloy and Allawayne Hunter; Ashley Yayock and Bianca Roop followed; and we currently have Shannon McMasters, Aimee Jones and Amanda Butler working together to co-coordinate the HSO Volunteer Program. Each of these women has given her time and her heart to growing the Volunteer Program and each has had an integral hand in creating the program it is today. We thank them! The focus of the program originally was to build a dedicated cadre of volunteers and have them show dogs that had been rescued from neglectful and cruel situations. Several large-scale, multiple dog rescues in 2009, 2010 and 2011 drew many volunteers to assist with caring for and socializing with these frightened and timid animals. Volunteers especially loved attending the Fayetteville Farmers Market on Saturdays and showing the public some of the dogs that were ready for adoption. Also during this time, various fund-raising events, such as Dogwood Walk, Putt for Paws, Par for Paws, Party in the Pasture and the HSO Pet Day Planner and Tails of Love Preview Party, were staffed and made possible largely by volunteers. Today, our Volunteer Program includes a training handbook and complete orientation session. During the 2011 volunteer season, approximately from March through December, HSO had the benefit of 58 individuals who volunteered their time and efforts toward helping the organization’s animals and programs. Won’t you consider getting involved, too?
