Many years have passed since
Howard Zane and I first met. During that time, in addition to sharing
Old Time Music, we discussed many aspects of model railroading and how
to promote and share the enjoyment of the hobby. In an effort to further
promote the hobby Howard and his partner Ken Young started The Great
Scale Model Train Show (tm) in 1982, now expanded to include “The All
American High Rail and Collector’s Show.”At the same time,
a 26’ X 26’ basement saw the beginning of an HO scale model railroad
empire. Then a new addition, and then another addition saw the expansion
of the creation of a world in miniature. As the layout took form, Howard
incorporated concepts and techniques learned from his Dad, own
experience in trying new avenues of construction, and from reading,
talking, and viewing layouts built by other model railroaders. Allen
Keller video production numbers 12 and 44 and several hobby-magazine
feature articles chronicle the progress of his model railroad over the
years. You will find many tips and learn many of Howard’s techniques,
but this is not really a how-to-do-it book. However, this
book is a “Howard” as he allows the reader into his life by opening a
window into his early years with his model railroader Dad and his
involvement in the hobby to the present day. As you turn the pages, you
can read and view the unique world he has created. You will note the
delicate balance required to construct a miniature world of track,
rolling stock, scenery, figures, and the blending of color and form that
frame the action of trains moving within the many and varied landscapes.
Sit back and enjoy your trip.
